WEMS Rice Farm is a public private partnership promoted by Wems Agro Companies Limited (WEMS). The company was incorporated in Nigeria with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in December 2013 with rice production as its primary nature of business. WEMS is also very particular about food security and nutrition in West Africa.
The company’s journey started with the entrepreneurial aptitude of Mr. Rotimi Wemimo Akinsola (founder), who since 2008 has been a supplier of imported rice to cooperative societies and trade organisations across Nigeria.
Following a Federal Government of Nigeria’s fiscal policy that increased tariffs and duties on imported rice in 2012, Mr. Akinsola sought locally for his rice supplies where he discovered that Nigeria produces approximately 10% of the rice it consumes. This resulted to his desire to grow rice and as such the formation of the company.
WEMS has so far secured 5,400 hectares of land in Akotogbo village in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State to cultivate rice.
